Course Selection: Navigating High School – Then & Now Part II

Welcome back! If you missed the first installment view it here: http://www.myblueprint.ca/navigating-high-school-then-now-part1

In the 1980s, a 30 credit system, similar to what we recognize today, was introduced.  In the 1990s, the Ontario Ministry of Education Ministry regulated course codes and titles. This infused consistency and organization into the system – vital properties in navigating the extensive options available today. In previous decades, course codes and titles were made up by schools/boards, creating severe issues when students transferred schools and in deciphering transcripts.

Today it’s only natural to assume, given the way technology is rapidly advancing and changing the world around us, the traditional course selection method used by the parents of today’s students has gone the way of the pilgrim. Believe it or not, in many Boards today, students still manually fill out a paper form and transfer their selections onto a computer Scan Sheet just like their parents did!

In 2005, it became possible for students to plan and select their courses virtually with myBlueprint. Currently used by over 200 schools across Canada, myBlueprint seamlessly integrates with a school’s Student Information System, eliminating manual data entry and computer Scan Sheets. This streamlines and modernizes the course selection process for students, parents, teachers and counsellors.

“The courses available today give students more opportunity to discover the post-secondary destination that is right for them,” says Lorna McPherson, Toronto District School Board Guidance Program Coordinator. “And with innovations like myBlueprint, students are able to easily organize themselves and feel confident in the courses they choose.”

Research and organization are essential to bolstering student confidence in their course selections. Being able to explore the specific courses available at their school and instantly recognize the prerequisites needed is key to this confidence.  “High school is complicated enough,” says Gil Silberstein, President and Co-Founder of myBlueprint. “Course selection doesn’t have to be.”
