The Learning Muscle Part III

December 19 2011

Welcome back! Previously, you’ve learned how to work your brain out and feed it properly and now in Part III, our final instalment,  we’re going to consider the feelings of the guy upstairs. Read on to find out how de-stressing and having fun are crucial to a healthy brain.

REDUCE STRESS

Stressed out? Go to a comedy club! Believe it or not laughter is a great stress reduction technique. Laughter enhances your intake of oxygen-rich air and increases the endorphins that are released into your brain. Sleep is another important stress reduction technique, even more so for coping with existing stress. Having a solid night’s sleep will make the following day’s stress easier to manage and keep your brain from feeling overwhelmed. Also, make sure you make time in your schedule for you. It’s important to escape your stressors allow the mind to focus on something other than school, work and responsibilities. Having that break gives the mind a chance to clear and refresh itself.

STIMULATE YOUR SENSES

New experiences which affect multiple senses stimulate brain activity and help sharpen the mind. Experiences incorporating sights, sounds, smells, touches or tastes are ideal for this technique. Two suggestions are trying new foods. Any foods (especially spicy foods like Thai or Indian) utilize a broad range of spices and herbs which will actually stimulate your smell, taste and stimulate visually as well and getting out to a live concert which not only fulfills the sensory stimulation but the incorporated fun-factor will definitely help reduce any residual stress you’ve been under!
